Guest Post: How Far Is Too Far? by Pascal Scott

I’ve got another treat for you today. Pascal Scott is making her first appearance on I Heart Lesfic, but I have a feeling it won’t be her last. Also, she’s giving away a copy of Hard Limits to one lucky winner.

Please welcome, Pascal!

Thank you, TB, for this opportunity to post!

I’m very excited about my debut novel, Hard Limits. As you can probably tell by the cover, the book is a little, uh, let’s say edgy, and that’s what I want to talk about, briefly. After a long career in journalism, three years ago I started writing lesbian erotica. One night about six months into my new genre, I was at a lesbian get-together and that fact was mentioned (not by me, by someone else making small talk). The response I got was interesting. It was mostly a bunch of embarrassed chuckles. Like, wink wink. As if lesbian sexuality is still in this twenty-first century something naughty or something to be ashamed of.

So I thought, Huh. I’m going to write a book and explore this further. Because one of the questions I kept in mind as I was working on Hard Limits was: How far is too far? Because lesbian sexuality is all over the map. There are women for whom the idea of shaving their pubic hair feels too kinky. And then there are women who are unsatisfied unless they’ve got a sex slave (or two or three).

I tried to be fair in Hard Limits and present different points of view about the range of sexual experiences that lesbians enjoy. I worked that question—How far is too far?—into a suspense/thriller with a lot of erotic content. But the book is also a romance because I’m a romantic. A dark romantic, but a romantic nonetheless.

Another interesting fact about Hard Limits is that it was inspired by an actual event. There was a case of a sex slave in a Mistress/slave relationship in Tennessee who was beaten to death in a punishment that went too far. In part, Hard Limits is the fictionalization of that real crime. In practice, Mistress/slave relationships within the BDSM community are usually consensually beneficial to both women involved. But on occasion, those relationships take a dark turn. Hard Limits is the story of one such dark turn.

Thanks again for letting me post. And thanks for checking out Hard Limits.
