Striking While the Iron is Hot
There are a few things about me that you should know: a) I’ve been known to spontaneously break out into dance, b) Clue is one of my all-time favorite movies and if I must explain to you why, then we will never be friends (I’m kidding. Sort of.), c) I almost never take myself seriously, and d) I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was just a wee little ginger but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d write Contemporary Lesbian Romance and LOVE it as much as I do.
I think there are many times in life that you find yourself at a crossroads. In my case, that crossroads happened a few years ago when I was faced with a new challenge: embrace unexpected change or fall into seemingly endless uncertainty. In retrospect, these two choices were kind of similar in that both outcomes were uncharted. Either road took me out of my comfort zone, and over a big hill with an unclear path on the other side. But this moment was one of the most important moments of my life because it gave me a clarity that had otherwise been obscured by the hustle and bustle of life constantly getting in the way. That clarity was so obvious and blinding that it made me wonder just how much energy I had been using to ignore the giant, glittery rainbow elephant in the room. Life demanded I write about amazingly talented, sexy, strong women falling in love and having lots of steamy sex and it demanded it now, damnit!
What started as a hobby to distract me from the sudden shift in my normal quickly became a healthy and voracious obsession. I started writing Miss Match, the first novel in the Perfect Match series, to keep myself busy and give me something to look forward to each day. But suddenly it wasn’t just one book, it wasn’t just a standalone about a smart and savvy Boston based matchmaker…, it was another idea and then another. And before I knew it a series was born. Suddenly, it felt like my entire soul burned brighter than it had in a very long time. So clearly, the next book in the series had to be as white hot as my desire to keep writing, right? And obviously for that to happen it needed to have a charming, lady-killer female firefighter and some over the top romantic gestures, right? Right.
The idea for Strike a Match came to me in a flash. Literally. Like lightning. And I wrote it just as quickly- from start to finish, Strike took me just a day or two over five weeks to get on the page. It was a feverish pace but at the end of the day, I think it’s one of my favorite books to write. I love the characters. I love firefighter Sasha’s boldness and bravado and reluctant millionairess Abby’s sassy sarcasm and complexness. I love the way these characters felt so real to me- their chemistry was palpable throughout the entire writing process…I let them lead and whoa, *fans self*, those ladies led me down a blazing hot romantic journey.
If you had told me a few years ago that over that unexpected and daunting hill Life placed before me was a publishing contract writing about women loving women and a series about an irresistibly sneaky matchmaker bringing together all sorts of amazing ladies, I never would have believed you. Because not in a million years did I ever think that I could write about all the things that I love most in life: strong, successful women, passions igniting, and happy ever afters. But now that I’m here, I’m in it for the long haul. There’s never been a better time to embrace opportunity and run with it. I’m going to strike while the iron is hot and see where this road takes me. It’s been one hell of a journey, but it’s been worth every moment.

MEET THE AUTHOR
Fiona Riley was born and raised in New England where she is a medical professional and part-time professor when she isn’t bonding with her laptop over words. She went to college in Boston and never left, starting a small business that takes up all of her free time, much to the dismay of her ever-patient and lovely wife. When she pulls herself away from her work, she likes to catch up on the contents of her ever-growing DVR or spend time near the ocean with her favorite people.
Fiona’s love of writing started at a young age and blossomed after she was published in a poetry competition at the ripe old age of twelve. She wrote lots of short stories and poetry for many years until it was time for college and a real job. Fiona found herself with a bachelor’s, a doctorate, and a day job, but felt like she had stopped nurturing the one relationship that had always made her feel the most complete: artist, dreamer, writer.
A series of bizarre events afforded her some unexpected extra time, and she found herself reaching for her favorite blue notebook to write, never looking back.
