Southern Hospitality by Adan Ramie

At I Heart Lesfic, we believe the world could use a bit more kindness after one of the hardest and longest of years. Many authors have signed up to help IHL spread kindness in the world.

Today, the wonderful Adan Ramie is here to share a story. Also, Adan is giving away 1 ecopy of Devour. Below the guest post, you’ll find more details about the giveaway.

Take it away, Adan.

Southern Hospitality

I have great neighbors, y’all.

It’s hurricane season again here in Texas, and we’re about to head into the same uptick in storms that gave us Hurricane Laura in 2020 and the ultimate nightmare that was Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Things are stressful right now as we hold our breath for what this year might bring after the most recent COVID recommendations landed on us.

I’m thankful in these times for Southern hospitality. Without it, there wouldn’t be people handing out water and food and others rescuing people from flooded homes. Lives are lost, unfortunately, but more are saved because of good people who know what it’s like to lose something – or someone – in these storms.

My family moved into the neighborhood we’re living in last year, and because of the pandemic, we haven’t met many of our neighbors. That’s one of the things that makes what happened during Hurricane Laura so amazing. It gave me hope.

Our whole neighborhood lost power for several days. In August near the Gulf of Mexico, temperatures can reach the mid-90s F with a heat index (“feels like”) of 120F. Money has been tight since the pandemic began, and as it wears on, it’s only getting worse. My family had nowhere to go.

Enter my neighbors. We had never interacted with our neighbors, and all they knew about us was that we had a couple of kids who sometimes liked to hang out in the backyard. That’s why I was surprised when the head of the household caught me outside and overcame our language barrier and cultural differences to offer access to his generator.

The soft-spoken older gentleman told me he would be glad to let us plug in our refrigerator and a small window air conditioner for as long as we needed it. That ended up being almost a week, and it saved us.

He wouldn’t take money for it. He refused gasoline to replace what we might have used. This perfect stranger simply did it out of the goodness of his heart.

We still haven’t been able to interact with our neighbors, but I’m determined that we’re going to pay it forward. (We also bought a generator this year – just in case.)
