Literally Falling in Love by McGee Mathews

I don’t know about you, but the world seems to be getting pretty (insert your favorite colorful word here) intense. While I like to stay informed, I also like to laugh to deal with stress. And, I need some chuckles these days.

Today, the wonderful McGee Mathews is here to help us laugh with an embarrassing story. Also, McGee is giving away 1 ecopy of Exceeding Expectations. Below the guest post, you’ll find more details about the giveaway.

Take it away, McGee.

Literally Falling in Love

Back in the day, I worked for a major automotive manufacturing corporation. I was the lone single person in my main crew of friends, and they were dubious of my ability to find “suitable” women to date. On more than one occasion, it was suggested that I present a resume for them to screen my selections. My friends also harassed me about my “rules for dating” and in particular, the one about not dating anyone at work. But I was resolute. I didn’t even look, well, maybe look, but that was it. To add to my duress, my cubicle neighbor took great delight trying to pry out details of my social life. I always replied with some random rule number, sort of like a lesbian Gibbs on NCIS.

My department interacted between development engineering and pre-production mock-ups leading to running changes at the plants. We held weekly conference meetings between our building and several out-of-state production sites regarding the forecasted timing and potential effects of assorted impending changes. The same group of people, more or less, attended the meeting every week.

At the assigned time, I brought my jumbo Diet Coke and pushed through the oak doors. The teleconference room was cutting edge, even if the décor was left from the seventies. The room had several rows of risers covered in orange carpet and walls covered in thick sound-proofing fabric. The matching orange upholstered chairs were arranged behind long tables which all faced a large screen, not unlike Star Trek. I climbed the first two risers and then looked up. At the back table, I spotted someone. A female someone. A cute female someone. A new, cute female someone. The voices in the room disappeared. My vision tunneled to just her image. I was transfixed; however, I had not stopped walking. I caught my left foot in the leg of a table and did a face plant. Totally prone, flat on the floor. My pen launched into the back wall, my notebook skidded to the end of the step and I skinned my knees through my pants. The only shining silver lining was that the lid on my drink held firm.

I popped up as fast as I could, still clutching my aptly named drink tumbler. I collected my notebook and then took a seat. My boss handed me my pen. He had the kind of look on his face that made me wonder if I was headed to HR for drug testing. The meeting dragged on, and finally, back in the safety of my office, I tentatively asked my cubicle neighbor if she thought that the mystery woman might have noticed me. She guffawed and said that she was sure that she saw me, as did everyone in all three satellite offices. My takeaway was that she noticed me!

That’s the day I literally fell for my wife…
