At I Heart Lesfic, we believe the world could use a bit more kindness after one of the hardest and longest of years. Many authors have signed up to help IHL spread kindness in the world.
Today, the wonderful JM Dragon is here to share a story. Also, JM is giving away 1 ecopy of My Dear Vet. Below the guest post, you’ll find more details about the giveaway.
Take it away, JM.
A Precious Gift
Ten years ago, my cat Molly died. She was my first ever pet, I had always been too busy working in the UK to provide enough attention to have a pet. When I moved to New Zealand it was a whole new ball game. Molly adopted me within a month of me living at the rental property and she never left. You can imagine I was devastated. One of the vets who had taken care of Molly over the years, visited me for a cup of tea, she knew I had taken it hard. We talked about having a new pet. I said I did not think I could after the heartbreak of losing my ‘little girl’. Anyway, she left with my pathetic yes, I probably would.
Two weeks later I received a call from the senior vet nurse of the practice. She said they had the perfect cat for me. If I was interested as the vet had informed them that I might be open to another cat. Though she said if I needed more time to not rush, they would keep her until I decided to see her. Of course, I agreed to see the cat.
When I saw her, I hesitated bringing back too many memories. Then she placed her in my arms, a twelve-month cat, on the small size. Abandoned by her owners because they didn’t want to pay the vet bills when she was sick. That should have been motivation enough for me to take her home. Still, I hesitated. Until this furball snuggled into my shoulder and I was lost. From that day forward I was given a precious gift. Katie, named after the vet nurse who persevered with me, is my darling princess.
The kindness if you wonder is that a vet took time out to see a patient’s parent and console them, when it was so easy to say, just another day at the office. A vet nurse who promised to keep Katie until I could deal with losing Molly. From their kindness I made a commitment to place anonymously $500 NZ dollars as the Molly fund, renewed each year, at their disposal if someone had difficulties in paying for surgery for their cat. To-date Molly’s fund has helped 7 cats and their parents. I see the recipients either by photo or visit the vets and see them after surgery. Kindness is contagious I for sure am a recipient.
