One Percent
When I was a student at a small college back in the nineties, I worked for the school’s mailroom/motor pool. My jobs were simple—deliver the mail to the academic departments around campus and keep the cars clean. The pay wasn’t much but there weren’t many other places to work in the small town and I was happy to have the job. My boss, Doris, was a great person. Truly one of the kindest people I have ever known. Every Friday, she brought in baked goods and lunch for the four students who worked there. I looked forward to it all week, not only because she was a great cook, but it really helped my budget that it was free. At Christmas, she had cookies and treats for us every day and the day before the holiday break, she brought us all gifts.
One day, after another free Friday lunch, I asked her why she did so much for everyone. Her answer was simple—always give back one percent. At the time, I honestly didn’t get what she meant, but the saying stuck with me. Always give back one percent.
I graduated, moved away, and started to build a career. Eventually, I had a team of interns who reported to me. I thought nothing of buying them coffee or stopping to grab bagels for us to enjoy on Fridays. Being generous simply felt right, but it wasn’t until one of them asked me why I did so much for everyone that it clicked. I had learned from Doris, my boss at the college and my answer to the intern was the same—always give back one percent. I have no idea if the young man understood the meaning any more than I had at the time I first heard it, but hopefully, he did eventually. For me, though, from that day on, I embraced the philosophy even more.
Over the years “always give back one percent” has become how I live my life. I’ve passed the message on to dozens of people and have even witnessed it turned into action. It’s how I show my gratitude and respect to the ones who gave before me. Now, through Project Kindness, I have a chance to share it even further.
Be kind, be grateful, and always give back one percent.
