Really Grave Decisions

So, I was thinking about things that I’ve done in the past that now make me chuckle, and there seemed to be a theme: graveyards! But this one time is my favourite tale.

Let me set this scene a little. We lived across the street from this old church. Built in the 1850s, it had a small graveyard attached. Those really old graves that you could barely read the names of anymore.

It was all a little unkempt. Nobody really cared about this church anymore, and it kind of became a place where kids would hang out.

So, it was wintertime, still quite early, but cold and grey, and dark.

Alright, so I was over there with my sister and a group of our pals and we were playing hide and seek – I should point out, we were probably around 14-17 years old.

Huge ornate monuments rose up into the air, making perfect hiding spots. Concrete angels offered a shadow to hide beneath.

We all ran off and hid, and eventually of course, we were found. One by one there would be a shriek and a shout of “gotcha!”

As we were all congregating on the patch of grass to decide on the next game, I saw my sister standing under a tree. The leaves had all but fallen, she was looking up at something, and one by one, we all moved closer to see what it was. All of a sudden, something fell from the tree and we turned in unison, screaming as we ran. None of us had any idea what it was. In my mind it could be anything, from a ghost to a vampire…who knew!

I just ran, and as I came towards the graves, I didn’t want to step on them – that would be disrespectful – so I started to leap them. All was going great until suddenly I wasn’t running anymore, and everyone else was growing smaller in the distance.

My foot had landed next to a grave and the ground beneath opened up, my foot going straight through it. I screamed, and my friends screamed, but kept running! None of them stopped to help…I had images of zombie hands reaching for my leg, so I yanked it out and hobbled my way to the gate.

To this day we still have no idea what it was that fell. My best guess is a bird dislodged a branch, but I have the scar on my leg to prove that I once had a narrow escape from zombies!
